What are trigger points?
Trigger points are tight, hyper-irritable knots that form within muscle tissue when fibres become stuck in a contracted state. They can develop from overuse, poor posture, stress, or injury — and unlike ordinary muscle soreness, they don’t resolve on their own. Left untreated, they can refer pain to other areas of the body, making the original source difficult to identify.
What conditions are commonly treated with trigger point injections?
Trigger point injections are used for a range of conditions where muscle knots are driving the pain, including:
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Low back pain
- Fibromyalgia
What to expect during the procedure
The procedure is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. The skin over the trigger point is cleaned and a fine needle is inserted directly into the knot. A small amount of local anaesthetic is injected to deactivate the trigger point and relax the surrounding muscle. Most patients feel a brief twitch or pressure at the moment of injection, followed by a noticeable easing of tension.
What happens after the injection?
Some mild soreness at the injection site is normal for 24–48 hours. Most patients notice a reduction in pain within a day or two, and are able to return to their usual activities shortly after. Your doctor may recommend a course of injections alongside physiotherapy for longer-lasting results.
